It all began in the 1950s. Wayne Foster, blind since birth, began playing piano at age three. He met Marin at a fundraiser when she was just 16, and, together, they built Wayne Foster Music. From that moment, the duo performed at society events and even White House inaugurations.

In 1972, they brought their East Coast big-band sophistication to Southern California. Over the next five decades, they’d perform at more than 25,000 events for nearly six million guests.

Bonnie Foster grew up on stage. By age six, she was performing alongside her parents’ band.

I can still remember the three violinists – who happened to be identical triplets – playing at the Port-A-Cashe as guests were welcomed onto the newly opened gorgeous property. The evening swelled with appetizers, fireworks, and festive patriotic music on the Aria Lawn. An amazing dinner followed and guests dazzled and danced in the Elizabeth Ballroom.

On this night, I was given the unique opportunity to perform classic and contemporary hits with my late father, Wayne Foster, and our magnificent full-dance orchestra. Even as a kid, I knew there had to be something healing and transformative about music. In the last 15 years, there have been several studies that show music may calm anxiety, reduce depression, ease pain, and boost the immune system. Learn some of the health benefits of listening to music below.

Music to Relieve Stress

Studies are finding that music is effective for relaxation and stress management. From personal experience, you may feel like music can have a profound effect on your emotions and mood. Faster music may make you feel more alert. Upbeat music may make you feel more optimistic. A slower tempo may make you feel more relaxed.

Research indicates that listening to music impacted the psychobiological stress system. Listening to music prior to a standardized stressor predominantly affected the autonomic nervous system (in terms of a faster recovery), and to a lesser degree the endocrine and psychological stress response, according to a 2013 study published in The National Center for Biotechnology Information .

Live Music, Too

Researchers have also shown that watching while listening to live music being performed could help reduce people's levels of stress hormones, including the steroid cortisol (your “fight-or-flight” hormone). Daisy Fancourt and Aaron Williamon, researchers from Imperial College London, wrote in the journal Public Health about a study in which volunteers had their stress hormones level tested with a saliva sample before a concert performance, and then 60 minutes later during intermission. In an attempt to eliminate variables, they tested at two concerts, both which played the exact same music and went for the same length of time. The team found that, across the board, levels of the stress hormones cortisol and cortisone had decreased during both concerts.

Music to Boost the Immune System

According to a 2013 review in the journal Brain Behavior and Immunity, the emotional and psychological effects of listening to music have a direct impact on biomarkers and hormone levels. Immunoglobulin A, which plays a crucial role in immune functions, was cited as being “particularly responsive to music.”

"We think the pleasant state that can be induced by music leads to special physiological changes which eventually lead to stress reduction or direct immune enhancement," says Dr. Ronny Enk of the Max Planck Institute in a study with Sussex University conducted in 2008 on the impact of music on the immune system .

In this study, 300 participants listened to either 50 minutes of upbeat dance music or, in the control group, a "random collection of tones." The participants who listened to dance music saw a significant decline in their levels of cortisol in comparison with the control group, while their levels of antibody immunoglobulin A, a vital aspect of the immune system, increased.

Music Therapy to Reduce Depression

Research has also found that music therapy, an intervention that involves regular meetings with a qualified music therapist, may help in improving mood through emotional expression. An authoritative review of research performed between 1994 and 1999 reported that in four trials, music therapy reduced symptoms of depression, while a fifth study found no benefit.

Music to Minimize Pain Perception

According to Harvard Health, music therapy can also help to minimize pain perception , and has assisted both patients with "intense short-term pain" and patients with chronic pain. Recipients of special music therapy needed less medication to manage their pain, felt more in control of their pain, and found some relief from pain-related depression.

Arrive in Style with a Second Line March

The second line march is a New Orleans tradition where a brass band leads a procession of your family, friends, wedding guests and any passerby who would like to join in. Parade participants dance their way down the parade route waving handkerchiefs or twirling decorative parasols in rhythm to the sound of the brass band. It’s a fun way to arrive in style to your cocktail hour location. Here’s a photo from a wedding we did for a San Diego couple who met in New Orleans and wanted a second line march to honor those roots. A tasting table is always a hit at cocktail hour. Guests can try guided tastings of wine, champagne, local beers, whiskey, or tequila paired cheeses and charcuterie.

Carrying on Marin & Wayne Foster's Musical Legacy

2020 has been a year of many challenges, but it’s also been a time for me to reflect on and appreciate the things that matter most. When life throws curveballs, I often think of my parents, Marin and Wayne Foster, and how they have been such incredible examples of strength, resilience, and joy even when things get tough.

My father, Wayne Foster, was born totally blind. However, he never let his visual disability get in the way of leading a full and exciting life as an accomplished musician, entertainer, husband, and father. At age three, Wayne Foster started playing the accordion and then graduated to the piano. By age 12, he was winning contests on TV and even played an impromptu piano performance at The White House during a school field trip!

My parents met when my mother, Marin (age 16), was attending a fundraiser dinner dance in New York where my father, Wayne (age 17), was performing with his band. Feeling emboldened by a dare from her friends, my mother touched my father’s hand and he responded by gently placing his hand on top of hers. They say that at that moment, they both knew they would be together for the rest of their lives. My parents have now been married for almost 70 years.

Marin and Wayne Foster’s marriage is an incredible example of unconditional love and true partnership. They not only were a great team raising me and my three sisters, but together they also created Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment, a band in which my father played the accordion and the piano and my mother (having received music and voice lessons) sang, danced, played various instruments, and eventually went on to fully produce. When my three sisters and I were children, we also learned music and became a part of Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment.

Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment performed at inaugurations at the White House, and for many legendary names such as Oprah, Steven Spielberg, Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford, Julio Iglesias, Magic Johnson, Quincy Jones, Ben Roethlisberger, Corey Maggette, Berry Gordy, and Dr. Phil, to name a few. In the span of 50 years, Wayne Foster Music performed at over 25,000 weddings and other special events across the country and around the world.

I was born with music in my blood. By the time I was six years old, I was singing and dancing on stage with Wayne Foster Music. However, my parents wanted me to understand that performing wasn’t the only important part of running our family’s successful musical entertainment business, so during my high school years, they also taught me basic bookkeeping, how to audition and book talent, how to write contracts, how to provide exceptional customer services to our clients, and how to produce bands and orchestras. My parents taught me the value of hardwork in addition to the joy of music.

While I was in college at UCLA, I would travel to wherever Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment had an event and join the performance. After college, I got married and was blessed to become a mother to two beautiful children, Izzy (my son) and Sami (my daughter), so I decided to take their first 5 years off to be a stay-at-home mom. After my kids started school, I rejoined Wayne Foster Music to take on business development. I believed in our product and was passionate about making people happy and creating memorable events with our music. Within five years, I met with so many wonderful people planning parties, I was able to quadruple the number of weddings and special events for which we provided the musical entertainment.

I also acted as the Master of Ceremonies and Conductor for the New Wayne Foster Dance Orchestra, while my father played his signature white baby grand piano and my mother produced all aspects of the show from off stage, including the lighting, sound, wardrobe, music selection, talent placement, timing and every other detail that made our live musical experiences unique, elegant and fun.

Eventually, I went on to create Bonnie Foster Productions and continue to apply the lessons I learned from my parents and my upbringing in Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment to work hard, provide an exceptional experience, and exceed our clients’ expectations. I also learned that at live events, there will always be unexpected aspects that are out of our control, but a true professional quickly adjusts and adapts, and “the band keeps playing on” as they say.

I was recently contacted by a woman who told me that Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment performed at her wedding reception in the 1970s and now her own daughter was getting married and she wanted to have Bonnie Foster Productions be a part of it. I love hearing stories about how our family’s music helped to create wonderful lasting memories for life’s biggest celebrations for our clients.

I am honored to be able to carry on Wayne Foster Music & Entertainment’s legacy through Bonnie Foster Productions and to ensure that my family’s decades of experience in providing award-winning musical entertainment for weddings and special events continues to be shared with the world.

We’ve been in the event production and wedding business for a long time, and we are always being asked the same question: is it better to have a DJ or a live band? It can feel like an important decision, because the right music at a wedding or party can set the tone for the entire celebration and get people out of their chairs and onto the dance floor. Below we’ll weigh the pros and cons of live bands, DJs, and a third option, DJ/Band Hybrid Live experiences, so you can choose the best musical entertainment for your wedding or special event.

The Pros and Cons of Live Bands

Live Band Pros:

A live band can add a special touch of sophistication to your celebration and enhance your event style or theme. If you’re having an intimate sit-down dinner, a String Quartet offers the perfect elegant background music. If you’re having a lively celebration and want your guests to hit the dance floor, a Big Band dance orchestra may be the perfect choice.

Another benefit of having a live band is that the musicians can improvise to amp up your crowd with music that inspires them to get up and dance. Live bands can also give lyrics fun twists to make it more personal to your wedding, private party or corporate event. If you have guests that don’t like to dance, live musicians are still entertaining to watch.

Depending on your venue and its size, live music restrictions, noise stipulations and regulations may apply. Bands may need more space based on the number of people and amount of equipment, so be sure to consider the physical space available at your venue.

However, some live bands may not have the unlimited choice of songs that most DJs have available. How to Plan a Socially Distanced Wedding

Let’s face it. Getting married during a global pandemic was never in your wedding contingency plan. It can be hard not to feel disappointed and cheated by Coronavirus hijacking your big day. However, it’s still possible to make your wedding day feel incredibly special, even if it may not be quite how you envisioned. If you don’t want to postpone, here are tips on how to plan a wedding during COVID-19.

Consider a Small Outdoor Micro Wedding

Imagine an intimate outdoor wedding at sunset with your immediate family and a handful of close friends. Southern California has great weather year-round and tons of outdoor spaces for “micro weddings” (socially-distanced weddings under 50 people).

You may still be able to book an outdoor wedding venue, or you can consider a local park, nearby beach, or a backyard. Just be sure to pay attention to local COVID-19 rules about parks and beaches.

Revise Your Guest List for Social Distancing

Unfortunately, you may need to reduce the number of guests you planned on having at your wedding in order to ensure a safer, more socially-distanced experience for everyone. Start by thinking about who you can’t bear the thought of having your special day without (your closest family members, best friends, etc).

This probably won’t be an easy thing to do without feeling conflicted, but it will make reducing your guest list a lot easier if you rank guests by those you’ll miss the most on your wedding day.

It may also help to sort people into categories like “immediate family,” “extended family,” “closest friends,” “good friends,” and “co-workers.” Reducing your guest list by group categories may help people be more accepting of their omittance from your wedding day if they know that someone else who plays a similar role in your life has also been omitted.

Some people may be hurt about being uninvited to your wedding, but unfortunately it's a situation many soon-to-be-married couples are finding themselves in because of COVID-19 and the best you can do is offer your explanation, apologies, and alternative ways they can celebrate with you (see below for some ideas on that).

Make the Most of Your Wedding Masks

At this time, it’s recommended that everyone wear a mask at your wedding, so be sure to mention that in the wedding attire section on your wedding website.

You can work the masks into your wedding design by coordinating them with your wedding color palette. Instead of buying your wedding party matching robes or other gifts, you could give them custom-designed masks.

It’s also a good idea to offer facemasks for all of your guests. Do a quick search on Etsy and you’ll find a ton of adorable wedding masks made with lace, satin, beads and even customized masks with your names and wedding date. They make for a great photo opp to commemorate this wild time in history in which you tied the knot.

Space Your Guests Apart

At your wedding ceremony, allow more space between chairs and offer socially-distanced standing room. You may consider assigned seating at the ceremony. People can sit with everyone in their household and those they’ve been “social bubbling” with (which usually means close family members like parents and siblings).

During the reception, spread the tables further apart than you normally would and consider reducing the number of guests per table. You may consider going with smaller tables of four and seat guests by household (like families, couples, or roommates). Now is also the time to embrace the sweetheart table. Be sure to have hand sanitizer available throughout your venue as well as on every reception table.

How to Serve Food at Your Socially Distanced Wedding

You’ll probably want to avoid hors d’oeuvre trays, self-serve buffets, “family style” meals, and dessert displays during COVID-19. You can opt instead for plated dinners, a staffed food station with a plexiglass barrier, or a hip food truck. People tend to congregate around the bar, so you may want to consider having more than one bar area. Your caterer should be willing to work with you on the safest and best way to serve your guests.

Dance Floor & Wedding Entertainment Tips

Music and dancing can be one of the most fun aspects of your wedding day, and you shouldn’t have to scrap the dance floor just because of social distancing. Instead of having one big dancefloor, you could install multiple smaller dance floors throughout the space to keep your guests spread out. If you want to have one big dance floor, you could encourage social distancing by marking the floor with tape to show how far people should be apart while dancing. People from the same households can still dance close together.

Another option is to use the dance floor for after-dinner entertainment after your first dance as a couple. Dazzle your guests with professional dancers or specialty vocalists – get creative! Eventually, you can print out a photo guestbook for a physical keepsake.

Modify Your Photo Booth

You can still have a photo booth at your wedding, but we recommend skipping the props to avoid a lot of people touching and wearing them. In lieu of photo booth props, consider investing in an unique photo booth backdrop.

Live Stream Your Wedding

Live-streaming your wedding ceremony is a great way to allow friends and family who can’t be there in person to experience your special day in real-time. One DIY way to do this is to livestream through one of the platforms below:

You’ll want to designate someone to set up a camera, phone, or iPad on a tripod in an unobtrusive spot. Make sure that you test the Internet connection at the venue beforehand. You can stream via a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or a newer GoPro. Select a device with a good camera and make sure to clean the lens before you live stream.

If you’re live streaming outdoors, consider investing in an external microphone with a sound baffle (also known as a windshield). You can buy a low-cost baffle that plugs directly into a smartphone for under $50. This will reduce background noises like wind and chatter.
